Should a patient be able to erase information from their medical records? Explain why/why not.
Should a patient be able to erase information from their medical records (i.e. embarrassing diagnoses, unwanted information, information they don't want to share with a new doctor, et cetera)?
I have a discussion in my course about medical records and why it should/should not be okay for patients to erase info from the medical records.
Personally, I am torn.
I believe a person should be able to hide certain data on their records if it's not useful to the person they are hiding it from.
I do not believe a person should be able to erase info permanently. Medical records and our medical history is there for a REASON. That information is put there so future doctors can correctly diagnose a patient.
I read an article about a gentleman who wanted to erase his postive HIV diagnosis from his records.. I can understand, he is embarrassed. But, a doctor is not there to judge nor make fun. A positive HIV test should be kept on a patients medical record because this STD can and will lead to other sicknesses and symptoms and if the hospital or a new doctor doesn't know that a patient has HIV, then they will incorrectly diagnose the patient and this could lead to improper care, incorrect medications, et cetera.
I'd love to hear anyone else's feedback on this question.
