Answer #1

GPW Company's period costs for 2026: $ 197,000

Depreciation : Office Equipment $ 24,000
Advertising 73,000
Rent ( $ 45,000 x 40 % ) 18,000
Shipping goods to customers 28,000
Sales commission 54,000
Total period costs for 2026 $ 197,000

All costs related to manufacture of the firm's product are product costs. Product costs can be deferred to the next accounting period through ending inventories. Not so with period costs. All non-manufacturing costs are period costs.

All non-manufacturing costs are charged to profits in the period in which they are incurred.
