During the first week in April, Courtney Nelson worked 46 hours and produced 1,450 units under a piece-rate system. The regular piece rate is $0.38 a unit. Nelson is paid overtime according to the FLSA ruling for overtime work under a piece-rate system.

Overtime Earnings for Pieceworkers—Method A

For overtime work, the pieceworker is entitled to be paid, in addition to piecework earnings for the entire period, a sum equal to one-half the regular hourly rate of pay multiplied by the number of hours worked in excess of 40 in the week.

With the Reference problem 2-17B

The Piecework earning under regular hourly rate (1120 pieces*$0.38) = $ 425.60

Overtime hourly rate for Pieces during overtime hours ( 330pieces * $0.38) * 1.5 times = $ 188.10

As per FLSA system 0.50 paid for number of hour work above 40 per week

( 46 hour - 40 hour = 6 hour * $0.38 * 0.50 ) = $ 1.14

(i) Regular piece work earning = $ 425.60

(ii) Overtime Earning

-- Earning in Overtime hour $ 188.10

-- Earning under FLSA System $ 1.14 = $ 189.24

(iii) Total Earning

-- Regular Piece work Earning $ 425.60

-- Overtime Earning $ 189.24 = $ 614.84
