Theophylline, a methylxanthine, is used to treat asthma. Explain the mechanism by which a theophylline can alleviate asthma symptoms resulting from bronchial constriction (think of a pathway cAMP is involved in).
Theophylline helps in relaxing the smooth muscles which tightens to cause bronchial constriction. It also helps in relaxing pulmonary vessels & decreases the airway responsiveness towards adenosine, histamine, methacholine & allergen. The methylxanthine drug totally blocks type III & IV PDE (phosphodiesterase). PDE is an enzyme which breaks down cAMP in cells of the smooth muscles. Thus, an increased cAMP in the smooth muscles cells, helps in muscle relaxation.
hope the answer helps.
