Discuss Freud’s idea of psycho-sexual stages of our mental development. Is there any evidence for or against these stages?
Freud is considered as the pioneer of psychology. He has contributed to the society and field of psychology with his personality theory, developmental theory and psychoanalytic therapy. Psychosexual development still stands as the most controversial developmental theories but most people argue for the pleasure principle which Freud associated the organs with. Sexual feeling is not what Freud wanted to communicate through his theory but it’s the pleasure center that he was referring to. An infant sucking its fingers, a child holding its bowls as it finds the pleasure in doing so, a boy or girl with fiddling with their own private parts, no sex stage and at the end the the genitals pleasure all refers to where and through which activity one finds pleasure. His attributing everything to sexual feelings is not an acceptable one because no one gets sexual feeling once in six seconds because it would be ridiculous. It’s all about one becoming a grown-up adult. It’s also about the mind’s switching of pleasure organs.
