Answer #1
  • Oxidising agent removes electron from other reactant.
  • Reducing agent losses the electron to the other reactant.
  • Oxidation: Loss of electrons is known as oxidation.
  • Reduction: Gain of electrons is known as reduction.

1. C + O2\rightarrow CO2

Here C has oxidation number 0 in reactant and +4 [x + 2(-2) = 0 ; x = +4] in product (CO2).

So it means carbon is loosing electrons which means it is undergoing oxidation.

We conclude O2 is Oxidising agent and CARBON is Reducing agent.

2. C4H10 + O2\rightarrow CO2 + H2O

Carbon has oxidation number -2.5 in C4H10 and +4 in CO2.

So it means carbon has lost electrons and has undergone oxidation.

O2 is Oxidising agent and C4H10 is Reducing agent.

C2 T13HW Question 15 - CHALLENGE HomeworkUnanswered Fill in the Blanks Antimony (Sb) is a chemical element that is often used to make alloys with lead and tin. The quantity of Sb in a sample can be determined by an oxidation-reduction titration using a sample of Sb ore as the analyte and an oxidizing agent as the titrant. Consider a reaction in which a 9.47 g sample of stibnite, an ore of Sb, is dissolved in hot, concentrated HCl(aqHCl(aq) and...
