Question

# 5 (15 pts) Carbon intensity may be defined as either (i) the amount of carbon by weight emitted per unit of energy released, orii) as the amount of CO2 released per unit of GDP. In this problem we look at carbon intensity from the perspective of the first definition. So, we investigate the amount of CO2 released per kg of fuel combusted. The data is for butane, wood, gasoline, and coal. Butane (C4Hio) Wood (CH2O) Gasoline (C,H 50 NM Coal (pure carbon) 30 M 50 MJ 10 MJ The following fuel reactions occur that produce CO2: For butane: C4Ho 6202 -> 4CO2 + 5H20 For wood: CH20O2 > CO2+ H20 For gasoline: CHis 12*02 -> 8CO2 +9H20 For coal: C+O2 → CO2 Calculate the energy released per kilogram of CO2 emitted for these fuels

DESIGN OF A STEAM POWER PLANT IN THE AGE OF CARBON TAXATION, Due: Aug. 15, 2018 Introduction: As the world continues to spew unprecedented amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as a result of combustion of fossil fuels, many countries are considering imposing a "carbon tax." A carbon tax is a tax on the carbon emissions, which are currently emitted for "free." The tax would effectively raise the cost of burning fossil fuels in an amount proportional to the...
