1) You manage a fabrication department. Your department needs to machine 1,000 brackets to be delivered to the assembly department for the assembly line which will begin working in 72 hours at 6 am. You will hire temporary help to fabricate the brackets. One unskilled candidate can be trained and get the job done in 72 hours @ $12.00 per hour. Another candidate who already has the skills can do the job in 40 hours @ $25.00 per hour. The most important consideration is that the brackets are delivered by 6:00 am when the assembly line starts up.

Make a list of all your alternative hiring decisions, the pro’s and con’s, and cost efficiency and effectiveness of each alternative.

2) You manage a production department from Monday to Friday with a day shift and a night shift, 20 employees each. There is a refrigerator in the break room for the convenience of those who want to keep personal food and beverages for lunch and snacks. Your day shift supervisor sends you a memo complaining about the night shift’s disposing of the day shifts property left in the refrigerator. At the same time you receive an email from the night shift supervisor complaining about the day shift’s storing food and left-overs for days which leaves little room for the night shift to use the refrigerator. You also receive a note from the Saturday cleaning service. It mentions that there are a number of old spills, old food, and containers in the refrigerator from the previous week. The note also states that the refrigerator will not be cleaned because they do not want to be liable or blamed for any missing food, food containers, drinks or other property left by employees.

First, submit a list of all your alternative resolution decisions and the pro’s and con’s or each decision.

Second, pick one of your alternatives and write any policies or procedures for its implementation.

1)Submit your lists of alternatives, and

2) Submit your chosen alternatives which must include policies and procedures for implementation of your chosen alternative.

1.

First option for us to employ a temporary worker for 72 hours at 12 an hour, which will cost you 12 * 72=864. However, the unskilled nature of the worker may result in low quality work that may not be satisfactory to the customer or may take extra time to make corrections, a reality that may prolong the process for which timely completion is of utmost importance. The second choice would cost 40 * 25=1000 which will guarantee high quality work in addition to providing buffer time to make sure no delays occur.

2.a)

Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) :-This can be characterized as the number of activities or processes aimed at helping the various parties involved in a conflict to settle the conflict or disputes without the need for any legal proceedings. In short, ADR refers to the method of out-of-court settlement of disputes or conflicts.

Different types of ADR methods are as below:-

Mediation:-

This is the ADR method in which a neutral or a third party tries to settle disputes between the parties to the dispute. This is achieved by defining problem problems, presenting different solutions and attempting to find a solution to them.Mediation is effective when both parties have confidence in addressing the issues in the presence of the third party, when both parties seek to preserve the best possible working relationship with the rest of the parties and try to find an creative solution to the dispute.

Conciliation:-

It is again an ADR mechanism where a third party attempts to figure out how the conflicts are resolved. It is worth noting that the impartial party will be thy specialist in the subject matter and he does not make any conclusions or judgments. This procedure may be performed willingly or as per court order or as part of the contract. This is necessary when the conflict relates to some technical issue and the parties are searching for the truth on the disputes.

b)Arbitration is the most efficient type of ADR. In this method, a neutral person is used who is called an arbitrator to evaluate the various aspects of the dispute, prove and listen to the claims of various parties to the conflict and the decision is taken by the arbitrator, based on the situation, proofs and facts. This decision could either be binding or not binding. The binding ruling is one in which the unhappy party can not seek any more path and the arbitrator must make the final decision. However, in the event of non-binding arbitration, the rulings are not binding on the parties and, in the event of any conflict, either party can go down the trail. This is the best type of ADR, because it takes less time compared to court trials, and less money involved. Experts in a given field can be selected as an arbitrator.
