Answer #1

Compact Bone

Location- it is present in diaphysis of long bone.

Structural unit- it is called osteons.

These are more dense and hard than the spongy bones. The bones are known as cortical bones which have number of osteons. Haversian canals are present in central longitudinal position parallel to the axis. Transverse or oblique canals known as Volkman's canal are also present. There are three different kinds of lamellae that present in the matrix - haversian, interstitial and circumferential. Lamellae are interconnected by canals which in turn have osteocytes cells. Each lacuna consists of osteocyte. Two osteocytes are connected by each other through their cytoplasmic process and these process are being bounded in the canals of lacuna known as canaliculi. One type of lamillae that is interstitial is present between two haversian system. Also there are two kinds if circumferential lamellae which are- outer and inner. So this how it compact bone is made up .

Spongy bone

Location- present in ribs, sternum, pubis, vertebrae, clavicle, end of long bones etc

Structural unit- it is called trabeculae.

These also known as trabecular bone. These bones have lots of vessels lining inside them and contains red bone marrow. These are found at the ends of the long bones called as epiphysis. These bones have small cavities known as lacunae which consists of osteocytes , matrix as well as marrow. Now, osteocytes which are present near the blood cells are then placed near the vessels and these are interconnected by canaliculi. All the spongy bones are haemopoietic. Haversian system is absent in these bones.
