Sodium hypochlorite best described as a chemical compound with formula NaOCl or NaClO, comprising a sodium cation (Na+) and hypochlorite anion (OCl-). But Crystalline pentahydrate is more stable  than that of anhydrous compound.

Sodium hypochlorite is more stable in dilute solution which contain solvated Na+ and OCl-. 1:100 dilution of 5% NaOCl is generally used as bleaching agent.

NaOCl + H2O HOCl + NaOH
