(1x5) marks Iron is an important element, which our body needs for many of its functions. In our blood, it is the carrier of Oxygen. It is the fourth most common element in the earth's crust. In today's world, iron and its alloys are the most common industrial material due to its low cost and better mechanical properties. The extraction of iron metal takes place from its ore in a number of steps, which are summarized below. Step 2: Now the ore which is a mixture of Hematite (Fe,03) and Magnetite (Fe304) is mixed with Limestone (CaCO3) and Coke. This mixture is fed into a blast furnace (diagram given above). Step 3: In a blast furnace (diagram given), Hematite and Magnetite are reduced to ferrous oxide (Feo) by reaction with coke in presence of air. Step 4: At a very high temperature (1000 °C), ferrous oxide reacts with Carbon monoxide (produced by reaction between coke and air) to form iron and carbon dioxide. Step 5: Collection of molten iron from the bottom of the furnace that changes to cast iron after solidification.
