Two resistors 4.2 ? and 1.6 ? are wired in series to a 35.9 volt battery, as shown in the figure above. Find the total resistace of the circuit, the total current in the circuit, and the current through each resistor.

In Figure , the resistance are wired in parallel ,

Req = R1*R2/(R1+R2) = 1.158 ohm

I = V/Req = 35.9/1.158 = 31.00 A
I1 = V/R1 = 35.9/4.2 = 8.547 A
I2 = V/R2 = 35.9/1.6 = 22.437

If resistance are in series
Req = 4.2+1.6 = 5.8 ohm
I1 = I2 = I = V/Req = 35.9/5.8 = 6.18 A
