Pre-lab:
If your unknown was 2-bromooctanoic acid, what would you expect the
results of the following tests to be?
Solubility in:
H2O | NaOH | NaHCO3 | HCl | H2SO4 |
Jones Oxidation Test:
2,4-DNP Test:
Flame Test:
Beilstein Test:
H2O – Insoluble
NaOH – Soluble
NahCO3 – Ssoluble
HCl – Insoluble
H2SO4 – Insoluble
Organic acids don’t soluble in water and acids but they soluble in aqueous NaOH and NaHCO3.
Jones Oxidation Test: won’t work on 2-bromooctanoic acid.
It won’t work on acids because in Jones Oxidation reaction primary alcohols convert in to acid and secondary alcohols convert into ketone.
2,4-DNP Test: won’t work on 2-bromooctanoic acid.
Aldehydes and ketones are identified by using 2,4-DNP test. Acids won’t react with 2,4-DNP.
Flame Test: From this test, we can identify whether the compound is aromatic and aliphatic. Aliphatic compounds give luminous flame and aromatic compounds give sooty flame. 2-bromooctanoic acid aliphatic compound so it gives luminous flame.
Beilstein Test: We can identify halide compounds from this test. In this test halide compounds give copper halide. Beilstein Test is positive for 2-bromooctanoic acid and gives copper bromide.

I have Pre-lab assignment that requires me to make a flow chart to determine two unknown compounds each unknown is one of the following five white solids: benzoic acid ; sodium benzoate; glycine ; cinchonidine (free base) ; cinchonidine2HCl. Before the lab period, we have to work out and draw a flowchart of tests in which neutral water, acidic water (HCl) and basic water (NaOH) are added to each unknown to determine its solubility at the three different pH's. Thank...

1. (6 pts) These are some of the preliminary tests that you will be doing on days 1-2. For each test, write down what type of molecule would give a positive test and what a positive result would look like. DNP: Solubility Beilstein: Ignition: 2. (2 pts) For the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine test, write a chemical reaction between that reagent and one of the "known" compounds that would give a positive result. 17 1.
