we calculated the percent of ethanol (v/v) of a beer with the use of fluorescence and raman spectroscopy. The percent of ethanol labeled on the beer was 7.5%, but the value we found through lab was 4.5%. What does this mean exactly? Could we have made a mistake in our lab procedure, or is the label lying. Please explain for full points.

You calculated the V/V percentage of ethanol in the sample. However the labels are giving you a different term,alcohol proof.

Alcohol proof in UK is defined as 7/4 times the alcohol by volume(ABV).

In US it is defined as twice the percentage of ABV.

Thus both are correct.
