Ionic bond is formed when electron is completely donated to the non-metal by metal. Metal being more electropositive, it is easy for metal to form cation by donating electron whereas non-metal being more electronegative, it is easy for non-metal to accept electron from metal to form anion and as a whole and ionic bond.

So the transfer of an electron from metal to non-metal best describes the ionic bond.
