Archaea are novel prokaryotic organisms that belong to their own super kingdom (domain).
Archaea possess adaptations to their metabolic pathways that allow them to live in extreme environments such as areas with high levels of salt (halophiles) or high temperatures (thermophiles).
Although they share many bacterial characteristics members of the domain Archaea are more closely related to the domain eukarya than to the bacteria.
Characteristics that define Archaea include the presence of cell wall, but its structure is not composed of peptidoglycan like that of the members of the domain bacteria.
For example, both Archaea and eukaryotes share unique ribosomal RNA sequences and their ribosomal subunit structures are similar as well.
