Answer #1

Qualitative studies do not require review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), except under certain considerations related to these studies. A project should have key features of research. For example, it should be generalizable. The involvement of human subjects is another key determinant of whether a study requires IRB.

To qualify for expedited review, qualitative research must involve no more than minimal risk to the research participants. It should meet other standards, like exemption of protected classes or vulnerable populations. It should also not involve intentional fraudulence. If minor changes are proposed to an approved qualitative research study, during the period for which approval is authorized, then the expedited review can be used.
