True or False (just need t or f to double check)

1. Since atmospheric pressure is about 14.7 lb/in2, there is roughly 14.7 lb of force acting on your body due to the air pressing on you.

2. When a chunk of ice melts into a puddle of water, the particles in the puddle will have a greater amount of translational kinetic energy on the average than those in the ice.

3. It takes less energy to vaporize one gram of water than to melt one gram of ice.

4. The water at the bottom of Lake Eerie is 4 oC.

5. Assuming similar sunny conditions and the lack of facial protection, it is easier to get sunburn on your face when skiing on snow than hiking on a grassy hill.

Answer #1

1. F (force = pressure x area , the area of our body in greater than 1 inch² so force will be greater than 14.7lb.)

2. T (The molecules in ice are tightly bonded because that's solid state, on melting the kinetic energy increases as the bond breaks providing energy)

3. F (It takes 540cal to vaporise 1g of water but it takes only 80cal to melt 1g of water)

4. T (The density of water is maximum at 4 oC, that's why the most dense water is at bottom and hence the temperature of bottom is 4 oC)

5. T (The uv radiation is reflected by ice upto a very large extent as compared to grassy hills, that's why more sunburn is expected while skiing as compared to hiking on grassy hill.)
