complementary angles are angles whose sum = 90

Let the 2 angles be x and y. Therefore x + y = 90 or y = 90 - x ----- (1)

Also x + (y/2) = 72

Therefore 2x + y = 144 ----- (2)

putting (1) in (2)

2x + (90 - x) = 144

x = 144 - 90 = 54

y = 90 - 54 = 36

Therefore the larger angle = 54o.
