Sample standard deviation = s = 5.3

Test statistic is

X2 = (n-1) 2

2 (31- 1) *5.3 20 842.7 42.14

Degrees of freedom = n - 1 = 31 - 1 = 30

Level of significance = α = 0.05

Critical value = 43.773    ( Using chi-square table)

Test statistic < critical value we fail to reject null hypothesis.

Conclusion: The population variance is 20.
