Pressure and Archimedes Principle 2. Liquid mercury, which has a density of 13600 kg/m3, is commonly used in barometers to measure air pressure. A U-shaped tube closed at one end contains some mercury at the closed end (see figure) and vacuum above the mercury. Air in the open end exerts pressure on the mercury, and the mercury level rises until the mercury pressure in the closed end equals the air pressure in the open end. The height difference h between the closed and open ends is used to calculate the air pressure.
