Since lactic acid is a weak acid and lactate ions is its conjugate base, they together act as buffer solution.

Lactic acid (weak acid) <-----> Lactate(Conjugate base) + H+(aq) ; pKa = 3.86

Given pH of the buffer solution = 3.29

pKa = 3.86

Applying Henderson equation:

pH = pKa + log([Conjugate base] / [Acid])

=> 3.29 = 3.86 + log([Lactate]/[Lactic acid])

=> log([Lactate]/[Lactic acid]) = 3.29 - 3.86

=>  log([Lactate]/[Lactic acid]) = - 0.57

Taking power of 10 to both sides

=> [Lactate]/[Lactic acid] = 10-0.57

=>  [Lactate]/[Lactic acid] = 0.269 (Answer)
