1. when the two plates diverge, due to decrease in pressure because of removing of upper plates, melting point comes down and melting takes place which leads to formation of magma that comes out and creates plates and leads to accretion of continents.

2. When there is a hot spot lying below, it leads to release of magma from here (example - Hawaai islands) which leads to formation of island arcs or individual islands which is also a part of continental accretion. this process can also occur on the continents to form volcanic mountains.

3. Collision of two plates also leads to accretion. (Example - Rockies in North America)
