Living with AIDS The table gives the number of people diagnosed with AIDS/HIV in 2010 in the five states with the largest number of causes, as well as the District of Columbia, as reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It also shows the population of those regions at that time from the US Census Burea. Find the number of people diagnosed with AIDS/HIV per thousand residents in each region, and rank the six regions from highest rate (rank 6) Compare these rankings (of rates) with the ranks of total number of cases. If you moved to one of these regions and met 50 random people, in which region would you be most likely to meet at least one person diagnosed with HIV? In which of these regions would you be least likely to meet at least one person with HIV?

State HIV Population
New York 192,753 19,421,005
California 160,293 37,341,989
Florida 117,612 18,900,773
Texas 77,070 25,258,418

Answer #1
State HIV Population rate RANK
New York 192,753 19,421,005 9.924975561 2
California 160,293 37,341,989 4.292567276 5
Florida 117,612 18,900,773 6.222602642 3
Texas 77,070 25,258,418 3.05125998 6
New Jersey 54,557 8,807,501 6.194379087 4
District of Columbia 9,257 601,723 15.38415517 1

Here we calculated the rate that is, the number of people diagnosed with AIDS/HIV per thousand residents in each region as

no. of individuals diagonised with HIV/AIDS - * 1000 total population

Thus district of Columbia has the highest rate.  So, If you moved to this region (District of Columbia) and met 50 random people, you would most likely meet at least one person diagnosed with HIV.

While,Texas has the lowest rate. So, if you moved to this region (Texas) and met 50 random people, you would least likely meet at least one person diagnosed with HIV.
