The Internet has afforded a wide opportunity to the consumer goods industry. As a result, consumers are going directly to the Internet to buy their basic and common necessities. Based on Parnell (2014), “As Internet usage expanded and capabilities and security grew more sophisticated, consumers learned to integrate technology into their daily lives” (p. 42). I include myself among the consumers for which these words apply. I’ve never been a firs adopter of new trends or technology, however, slowly but surely, I started to test it with small scale purchases. I was at first afraid that by the action of buying items online, my personal identity and credit card information could be stolen. This fear was due to how unfamiliarity I had with how the whole thing operated and how purchases were processed. As I became more familiar with the handling of transactions online, I now find myself hardly ever visiting a brick and mortar store to shop for any kind of item. If you do some research, often times you are able to find merchandise that are lower I price, where free shipping may also be included. Retailers also entice consumes by advertising promotions for those first-time buyers and throwing additional perks such as a greater discount in overall purchases. When I think of the most common and popular retailer I buy online from, my mind automatically goes to Amazon. They have built a large firm based on the model of cheaper prices as well as free shipping. I’m also a consumer for stores such as Walmart and Target. They also advertise offering such as cheaper prices and convenience of finding more items in one store. However, they still fall short in terms of competing with the giant firm, Amazon. The double edge sword, however, is the small mom and pop shops that don’t have the means to complete on this level. Even stores like Macys and J. C. Penny, once the traditional brick and mortar stores, are finding it difficult to compete and stay profitable. Another example is the stores close to my heart, the various bookstores. These stores were once my refuge as a young adult, and I saw many of these close down with my very own eyes. The internet created the avenue for books to be purchased by various retailers at cheaper prices and thanks to technology, it also created the electronic forms of reading and storing your favorite books. It’s not surprised this caused bookstore to become almost irrelevant in the industry and thus, kicked off the process of closing down the various stores. I struggle with technology a bit. In the case of books, Technology became easy and convenient. However, I can’t help missing these old books stores and the experience of visiting or spending a couple hours lost in one. Granted, depending on who you ask, this might be more of a notion of someone in a mature stage of their life rather than someone at a younger age.

Answer #1

Book reading is traditionally associated with the libraries however, in the present era library reading has become a rare occurance among the public. The online facilities are the only reason for the bookstores and libraries to disappear. We need to walk with the world in order to adjust ourselves according to it. I understand your concern about missing bookstores and libraries but if you consider this change in a positive way, you will be a happier person. Nations needs to be develop fast in order to compete with other nations and also for every citizen's development.

There are still various bookstores and libraries are present but not as many as in the past. You may need to travel a bit far for finding such stores which takes time and efforts. So, according to me take this change in a positive way and enhance your lifestyle. You have to change your prefences however, you can go to your favourite bookstores and libraries too if you want occasionally.

Online portals and websites also gives the opportunities to book stores and libraries owners a chance to become an online retailer. So, its not true that there business have had been kicked off. Even online stores and portals gives them the advantage to reach customers at a national or global level and they can boost their business by using some marketing strategies is a correct manner.

Citizens of every country go to bookstores and libraries ever now but yes the occurences of such a event is few. Once you started using the online e-books or purchasing physical books online you will not regret because of the convinience. You have to understand what nation wants from the citizens and its not the loss for anyone i.e either customers or retailers. I know many former bookstore owners have expanded their business to a large scale by introducing it to internet and believe me the numbers are whopping. As you mentioned, there are several discounts and offers going on the portals almost all the time and also some contests by which you can win great prizes.

One of the most positive factor involved with e-books is you are saving the enviroment, which is a greatest form of self gratification for me.

How would you respond to this post? As Bulls Eye is the only department store in Show Low and the nearest competitor is 49 miles away, it is operating in an oligopoly market rather than a monopoly since consumers could drive to the neighboring city. However, this is not convenient for the consumer, therefore, Bulls Eye has a strong competitive advantage over the Target 49 miles away. Raising the prices would be considered markup pricing as Douglas (2012) explains as,...
