1. A 0.100 M solution of the weak acid HB has a pH of 3.00. What are the [H+], [B-], and Ka for this acid?

2. A solid acid is dissolved in water. Half the solution is titrated to a phenolphthalein end point with NaOH solution. The neutralized and acid solutions are then mixed and the pH of the resulting solution is found to be 4.60. Find Ka of the solid acid.

3. Assuming your buffered solution contains acetic acid, HOAc, and the sodium salt of its conjugate base, NaOAc. Show the net ionic equations that occur when this buffered solution reacts with: (a) added strong acid, H+, or (b) added strong base, OH-

Answer #1

1)

pH = -log [H+]

3.00 = - log [H+]

[H+] = 1.0*10^-3 M

HB   <——> H+   +   B-

0.100       0       0 (initial)

0.100-x   x       x (at equilibrium)

Given,[H+] = 1.0*10^-3 M

So, x = 1.0*10^-3

So,

[B-] = x = 1.0*10^-3 M

Ka = [H+] [B-]/[HB]

= x*x / (0.100-x)

= (1.0*10^-3 * 1.0*10^-3)/(0.100 - 1.0*10^-3)

= 1.010*10^-5

    To understand how buffers use reserves of conjugate acid and conjugate base to counteract the effects of acid or base addition on pH. A buffer is a mixture of a conjugate acid-base pair. In other words, it is a solution that contains a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid. For example, an acetic acid buffer consists of acetic acid, CH3COOH, and its conjugate base, the acetate ion CH3COO−. Because ions cannot simply...

    Acetic acid, HOAc, has a Ka = 1.73x10^-5. You need to prepare a buffer solution with a pH of 5.00 from a solution of 1M acetic acid (HOAc) and 1 M sodium acetate (NaOAc). How many mL of NaOAc should be added to the 30mL of HOAc solution to create the buffer? Using this buffer as an example, provide the reactions that allow the buffer to resist changes in pH upon addition of 1) NaOH and 2) HCl.
