If you have a 1M stock solution and you want to dilute 1 :10 with water, how many mL of your stock are needed and how many mL of water, if you are making 100mL, 250mL and 500mL
Solution:
For dillution with water to 1:10 of 1M sock solution means to add 1 part of stock to every 9 part of water. For example, if we want to prepare 10 ml of dillute solution, then we will have to add 1 ml of stock in 9 ml of water.
1) For 100 ml
100 = (1part stock + 9 part water) x 10
Hence, volume of stock = 10 ml and
Volume of water = 90 ml
2) For 250 ml
250 = ( 1 part stock + 9 part water) x 25
Therefore, volume of stock = 25 ml
Volume of water = 225 ml
3) For 500 ml
500 = ( 1 part stock + 9 part water) x 50
Therefore, volume of stock = 50 ml
Volume of water = 450 ml
