AWA (Animal Welfare Act) law was set as LAWA (Laboratory Animal Welfare Act) in order to protect animals from illegal use in laboratories for testing and research. Today after multiple amendments, Animal Welfare Act has the following purposes
AWA is not a complete success. It doesn't do much about animal welfare. It just regulates how animals should be obtained for lab testing and sets minimum standards of how they should be used. Moreover, the act excludes many animals such as mice and rodents which are used heavily used for research.
