Both correctional psychologists and police psychologists are typically either clinical or counseling psychologists. The text discusses ethical issues that are specific to these two fields and in conflict with the “usual” role of the clinical psychologist. Saint Leo University has adopted six Benedictine Values as part of its liberal arts education. The value of Respect has been identified by the psychology faculty as particularly relevant for this course. Considering the ethical issues facing correctional or forensic psychologists, how can they still demonstrate respect to the examinee or individual involved in therapy, yet not grant full confidentiality? Discuss the ethical limitations, situations in which these limitations apply and suggest ways one can still show respect.

Answer #1

Forensic psychologists can demonstrate respect to the examinee in therapy and yet not grant full confidentiality by:

1)Resolving ethical considerations and the expectations of legal, governmental or organizational entities.

2) Psychologists should be familiar with judicial and administrative rules governing their roles as forensic professionals and should abide by them.

3) Psychologists cannot discriminate, harrass or exploit their examinees under the Ethics code. They also cannot have multiple relationships and conflicts of interest.

4) They should take care that the finding of the reports should not become available to persons who should not receive and do not need to have this information.

5) Maintaining privacy can get complex, however, psychologists should respect and protect the privacy of the people to whom they provide professional services.

6) Psychologists should be careful that their personal opinions are not reflected during assessment

Maintaining privacy and confidentiality is a complex situation and it has its limitations while implementing. The kind of information that should be released, to whom and under what circumstance is a major concern. The situation gets even more complicated as there is no set answer to these questions. It varies from case to case. In order to maintain respect with both the parties, the psychologist should have clear non disclosure and disclosure agreements so that there is no breach of confidentiality.
