General Form of a Linear Equation, Ax + By = C

1.You work in the purchasing department of an appliance retailer. This month you are stocking up on washers and dryers. Your supervisor informs you that your budget this month is $10,000. You know that the average wholesale cost of a washer over the past year has been $250, whereas the average wholesale cost of a dryer has been $200.

A. Write a linear equation in general form that relates the number of washers and dryers you can expect to purchase with your budget. Let w represent the number of washers, and d represent the number of dryers.

B.. Solve your equation in part (a) for d. In other words, express the equation in slope-intercept form. Express d as a function of w.

C. What is the slope of this linear function?

D. What is the vertical intercept of this function? Write it as an ordered pair.

E. What is the practical meaning of the vertical intercept?

F. What is the horizontal intercept of this function? Write it as an ordered pair.

Answer #1

A. Let w represent the number of washers and d represent the number of dryers

Average wholesale cost of a washer = $250

  Average wholesale cost of a dryer = $200

Budget = $10,000

Therefore,

250w + 200d = 10000

=> 5w + 4d = 200

B. 5w + 4d = 200

=>. 4d = -5w + 200

=> d = (-5/4)w + 50

Therefore, d = (-5/4)w + 50

C. Slope of this linear function = -5/4

D. Vertical intercept can be found by substituting w = 0

Therefore,

d = (-5/4)(0) + 50 = 50

Vertical intercept is (0, 50)

E. Practical meaning of vertical intercept is 50 dryers can be purchased with the allocated budget if zero washers are purchased

F. Horizontal intercept can be found by substituting d = 0

=> 0 = (-5/4)w + 50

=> (5 / 4)w = 50

=> w = 40

Horizontal intercept is (40 , 0)
