The article understanding of the Hyatt Regency walkway collapse
depicts a tragic incident which took place in the Hyatt Regency
Kansas City Missourie in July 1981. This non deliberate
mishappening to place during a t dance being held in the lobby
place. Two runways collapsed one over the other killing a good
counts of people. It made the nation point out at the engineering
ethics and mistakes alongside the disaster management abilities in
the construction of the building. It was proved out to be a big
failure. It was a multi storey Atrium in which four walkways
suspending out from the ceiling and made the lobby look extra
ordinary. The walkways were quite heavy and lied above each other
in an alternative manner. The minor mistakes contributed to the
huge disaster like the nuts were located at double sites rather
than one alined vertically on a welded joint. The walkway had the
minimum capacity to even support itself. It was a neglectful
corporate culture which made the the design commit numerous
architectural faults. The walkways were supported by a 1.25 mm
diameter steel tie rods and the second Runaway lide directly below
the fourth one. The fourth one comprised of three cross beams
supported by the Steel rods held together by nuts. The C channel
cross beams were hollow. There were three pair of rods which went
to the ceiling through the second walkway and the force walkway and
a nut benesth each tie rod that tightened up to the bottom of the
second-floor walkway. this was done to hold the 4th walkway intact.
In the original plan the weight the fourth walkway han to just be
the weight of 4th walkway while the load of the second walkway was
to be supported by the rods. However the revised design made the
cross beams support the weight of both the walkways. Also the
original design the bolts to be on the both sides of the box beam
instead of top and bottom but the revised design made the box beam
the weakest joint. During the tragedy, the box beam split into two
half and the nut supporting them fell through the gap created and
invited the tragedy.
Investigators concluded that the major problem was the lack of
communication during the construction. The preliminary design was
misinterpreted to be the final one . The associates were unable to
review the design thoroughly and was accepted ahead without the
necessary changes, calculations and reviews the major one being the
overloading of the second and the fourth walkways. It was heavily
criticized by saying that it was such an obvious flaw which could
be figured out even by a first year engineering student
