Answer #1

Q1) The main issue discussed in the case is -

Rising support costs and the aging manufacturing test infrastructure across its IT products in the manufacturing sites worldwide. This might result in losing profits to competitors with upgraded IT infrastructure.

Q2) The soft competencies that helped Jessie Garcia manage his globally spread project team members effectively include -

1. Interpersonal skills

2. Leadership skills

3. Project management skills

Q3) I agree with Jessie's approach of dividing the project teams region wise, communicating with them separately, consolidating and disseminating information on a regular basis and collaborating using MS sharepoint for document sharing. It helped Jessie in not only increasing the overall productivity of the teams as they need not deal with cross-communicating on a regular basis with individuals from other countries and cultures which might result in wastage of time and confusion. Also, the information sharing to ensure all the teams are aligned towards common goals made the communication process more efficient.

Q4) The case is about how a cross-cultural project team needs to be effectively managed to ensure collaboration and cooperation by avoiding cultural diversity and communication related issues that they might face which makes it difficult to effectively communicate and implement the project. It highlights the importance of soft skills and competencies of project manager in managing cross-cultural and cross-functional global team members.
