We just recently upgraded our user storage capacity Storage Area Network with a strategy for the next five years. Currently 800 users use about 60 Terabytes of storage, the new SAN was installed with about 180 TB to last the company 5 years, this was an extrapolation of the current storage needs and the growth patterns of the last 5 years. Still, organizations do go through unexpected growth which we rely on policy and constant monitoring to keep disk storage usage in check. Has anyone heard of Distributed File Systems (DFS)? How can this approach help resolve the current issue presented in this Unit’s DB? please explain in text about 100 words

Answer #1

A DFS is a client-server architecture based application, that allows the user/clients to access the data from the server as if it was stored in their own computer. DFS provides location transparency and redundancy to improve the data availability. DFS typically use data replication strategey  on multiple servers to prevent data access faliure.

In the senario given above where we need to revamp the storage DFS comes to be a handy solution. This organization can distribute their data accrss multiple servers and store permanent data into the seondary storage . DFS also enables sharig of data between different applications Allocation and management of space on a secondary storage device thus providing a logical view of the storage system, as a result the redundancy is reduced, availability is increased, security is increased. DFS also provides the file-sharing semantics, file-caching mechanism which again helps in improving the overall structure of the organization.
