PaGas is an energy corporation based in Pennsylvania. Currently,
it has one fracking
site, two gas extraction plants and a water recycling plant. The
fracking site fractures the ground by
pumping water, it requires 50 barrels (bbl) of water per day. The
gas extraction plants generate water
waste which cannot be disposed on the ground. This water must be
either transported to the fracking
site or to the water recycling plant. Currently, gas extraction
plant A is generating 20 bbl/day of water
waste while gas extraction plant B is generating 25 bbl/day. If the
total amount of water transported
to the fracking site is not enough to meet the daily demand of 50
bbl, then the company must purchase
freshwater at a cost of $70 per bbl in order to do so.
You are helping the manager of PaGas run their daily water
operation. This involves deciding where to
transport the water generated from each gas extraction plant
(either to the fracking site or to the water
recycling plant), and how much freshwater to purchase at the
fracking site. The cost of transporting
1 bbl of water from the gas extraction plants A and B, to the
fracking site and the water recycling
plants can be found in the following table:
From Gas
Extraction
Plant
To Fracking Site To Water
Recycling Plant
A $200 $100
B $180 $120
Use the following decision variables:
• XAF : Daily amount of water transported from gas extraction plant
A to the fracking site.
• XBF : Daily amount of water transported from gas extraction plant
B to the fracking site.
• XAR: Daily amount of water transported from gas extraction plant
A to the water recycling plant.
• XBR: Daily amount of water transported from gas extraction plant
B to the water recycling plant.
• XF : Daily amount of freshwater purchased at the fracking
site.
Answer the following questions:
(a) (5 points) What is the total daily cost of running the water
operation? (state it as a function
of the five decision variables). This involves the water
transportation costs and the freshwater
purchase cost.
1
(b) (4 points) State the constraints for gas extraction plants A
and B. All the water they produce in
a day must be transported to another location. (Here you will state
two constraints, one for plant
A and another one for plant B)
(c) (4 points) State the demand constraint for the fracking
plant. The total water transported to it
in addition to the freshwater bought must meet its demand.
(d) (7 points) State a linear program (LP) that minimizes the
cost of running the water operation for
PaGas. You do not need to solve this LP, but make sure it has all
required constraints.

An oil and gas company has M oil fields and N processing plants. Let i = 1, ..., M be the indices for oil the fields and j = 1, ..., N be the indices for processing plants. Crude oil is extracted from oil field i at a cost of ci dollars per barrel and its percentage of sulfur is ai , e.g. in every 10 barrels of oil, we have 10ai barrels of sulfur. All extracted oil is transported...
(Blending & Refining LP optimization problem) American Oil of Middle East has a refinery in Kuwait. This refinery has access to two types of crude oils that come from Wafra Field: Ratawi Crude and Eocene Crude. The daily availability for Ratawi Crude and Eocene Crude are 300,000 bbl per day and 200,000 bbl per day, respectively. The Ratawi Crude costs the company $15 per bbl, and the Eocene Crude costs $20 per bbl. The refinery distills the crude oils and...
Zark is a new Spanish clothing company that is trying to implement Zara's supply chain management. Currently, Zark has two production plants. Coimbatore Plant (in South India) can produce up to 1,000 clothing items per day, whereas Surakarta plant (in Java, Indonesia) can produce as many as 2,000 clothing items per day. All items must be distributed to one of the warehouses the company owns in Spain (Cartagena and Gerona) for quality control and packaging, before being shipped to their...
Problem 7. Unit Analysis and Engineering Design You have been hired to analyze the university's water usage. Much of the water used on campus goes toward irrigation. The only athletic field at Angelo State that requires irrigation is the soccer field. The daily irrigation demand, D in gal/day, can be calculated as ET,x F,x Ax0.62 D- E Where D-demand in gal/day ETo-Evapotranspiration factor (0.23 in San Angelo) Fp= Plant factor (ranges from 0.3 to 1.0 depending on type of plants...
A small coastal town in Queensland is subject to an increasing permanent population and also a transient influx of tourists during the summer period. Council already receives frequent complaints of restricted water supply. The water supply system comprises a rising trunk main from the treatment plant A to the service reservoir B, the service reservoir, and service mains to the consumption areas. Two consumption areas C and D at different elevations are gravity supplied from the service reservoir. The service...

A manager is trying to decide whether to buy one machine or two. If only one machine is purchased and demand proves to be excessive, the second machine can be purchased later. Some sales would be lost, however, because the lead time for delivery of this type of machine is six months. In addition, the cost per machine will be lower if both machines are purchased at the same time. The probability of low demand is estimated to be 0.20...

INTRODUCTION Jaden McCoy operated a dairy goat farm in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, and was considering expanding the rental of his goats for land clearing. In early 2011, McCoy successfully bid on a job to clear a section of property at a nearby resort. McCoy's goats performed as expected and he eamed a small profit in the process. The resort manager was quite happy because the difficult-to-reach areas of the property were cleared on time and on budget at a cost well...
