Answer #1

Answer:

Let us consider,

oxidation // reduction

Al / Al+3 // Ni+2 / Ni

Here to build galvanic cell , the Nickel and aluminum electrodes are used .

The standard reduction potential for the nickel(II) ion is equal to -0.26 Volts and that of the aluminum(III) ion is given as -1.66 Volts.

Ni+2 + 2 e- --> Ni ----------->(1) ; Eo = -0.26 volts

Al+3 + 3 e- ---> Al ----------->(2) ;  Eo = -1.66 volts

Here the voltaic cell may reverse the aluminium Al+3 reduction into an oxidation state

i.e.,

Eo = +1.66

Eo cell = + 1.66 - 0.26

Eo cell = 1.40 volts

Hence the reduction takes place at the cathode, So that Ni is the cathode.
