A worker exerts 85.0 lb on a lever to lift a weight. The distance from the worker to the fulcrum is 8.00 ft; the distance from the weight to the fulcrum is 2.00 ft. Find the weight lifted. Find the mechanical advantage of the lever.

Answer #1

here,

force exerted by the worker ,F = 85 lb

distance of the worker from the fulcrum , x1 = 8 ft

distance of weight from the fulcrum , x2 = 2 ft

let the weight be w

taking moment of force about the Fulcrum

F * x1 - w * x2 = 0

85 * 8 - w * 2 = 0

w = 340 lb

the weight lifted is 340 lb

    The figure shows a lever system, similar to a seesaw that you might find in a children's playground. For the system to balance, the product of the weight and its distance from the fulcrum must be the same on each side; that is, W1X1 = W2X2. This equation is called the law of the lever, and was first discovered by Archimedes. A woman and her son are playing on a seesaw. The boy is at one end, 5 ft from...

    2. How much is the maximum weight that this crane can lift (to avoid above issue) if the total weight of crane (itself) is 1200 lb, its height is 75 ft and the length of its arm (crane's boom) is 50 ft. The contact area between crane and the ground is a square shape (8 ftX8ft). Attach your calculation to the post. A rope, attached to a weight, goes up through a pulley at the ceiling and back down to a worker. The worker holds the rope at the same height as the connection point between the rope and weight. The distance from the connection point to the ceiling is 35 ft.
