If an electron has a principal quantum number (n) of 4 and an angular momentum quantum number (l) of 3, the subshell designation is

d) 4f

n - Principal Quantum number ( n = 1,2,3....)

l = Azimuthal Quantum number or angular momentum quantum number (s=0, p=1, d=3, f=4)

m - magnetic quantum number ( -1,0,+1)

So in 4f subshell

n=4

l=3

m= -3,-2,-1,0,+1,+2,+3
