Post-Lab Analysis Show algebraically that if the system is in equilibrium, the net torque will sum to zero about any point. Do this by designating an arbitrary point as a new axis of rotation, evaluating all torques about this new axis, and showing that the torques still sum to zero, provided they summed to zero around the old axis. For instance, let the point labeled X be considered the new axis of rotation: Xi X2 g® W, Let the locations of the hanging weights, the position of the support, and the center of gravity remain the same: Nothing changes physically, but you can evaluate the net torque around this new possible axis of rotation. Note that in this case, you will have to consider torque caused by the upward force of the support.

This is, of course, a seesaw type object where the area of suport is moved.

Torquesacting in clockwise direction is -ve and in counter clockwise direction is +ve

the torques about the new position X is  

net torque = 0

T = W1*x1 -W*x0 -Ws*xs ++W2*x2 = 0

W1*x1+W2*x2 = W*x0+Ws*xs
