Question
I need help determining if my isolated is beta hydroxyketone or alpha-beta unsaturated ketone by the following IR. Also I have to write the balanced chemical equation. We mixed Piperonal, 1-indanone, and Sodium hydroxide and produced our product via an Aldol reaction.

Thanks for the help!

Answer #1

The product is for sure the alpha-beta unsaturated ketone (not a beta-hydroxy ketone).

Explanation: If the product is a beta-hydroxy ketone, there should be a peak corresponding to O-H stretch in hydrogen-bonding with the carbonyl oxygen, i.e. at 3400-3200 cm-1, which is absent in the given IR spectrum.

The given IR spectrum shows absorptions at 1687-1400 cm-1, which clearly indicate the presence of alpha-beta unsaturated ketone.

According to the given data, the balanced chemical equation can be written as shown below.
