Indicate what a catalyst does in a reaction to change the reaction rate, and provide a possible explanation for how Cu2+ acts as a catalyst in Kinetics of an Iodine Clock Reaction (non-reactive compounds KNO3 and (NH4)2SO4 are added to replace the reactants KI and (NH4)2S2O8) ).

Hint: The Cu2+ ion, added in the form of a dilute Cu(NO3)2 solution, makes a suitable catalyst.

Answer #1

Catalyst decrease the activation energy of a reaction and as a result rate of the reaction increases.

In iodine clock reaction Iodine is oxidised to I2 and liberates two electron. If Cu^2+ is added to the solution, it can accept these two electrons to form Cu(s). Thus, in the process Cu is reduced.

Exercise 2 Separation of a Mixture Based on Acid-Base Properties One purpose of this exercise is to learn how to use a separatory funnel to extract a single component away from other compounds in solution. To do so, we will apply the principles of solubility and acid-base behavior you’re seeing in class. One of the compounds is neutral in the acid-base sense. It has no ability to either donate or accept a proton from an aqueous solution, and will remain...
