How do I calculate the Rate of Reaction and the Relative Rate of Reaction?
Answer:
The reaction is:
S2O82- (aq) + 2I-(aq) 2SO42-(aq)+I2(aq)
So we know that rate of reaction is change in concentration of reactants per unit time
Or rate = -∆[S2O82- ]/∆t. mol/lit-s ..........(1)
Here ∆t = 94 s
Change in number of moles(consumption) of S2O82- is given in the experiment as 2.5*10^-5 moles
Total volume of the solution = 50 ml = 0.05 lit
Or ∆[S2O8^ 2-] = - 2.5*10^-5/0.05 ( negative because conc. Is decreasing)
=-0.0005 mol/lit
Or rate = -∆[S2O8^2-]/∆t = -(-0.0005)/94
= 5.319* 10-6 mol/lit.sec
Relative Rate of reaction:
You can calculate rate of reaction as per equation (1) above for the no.of trials you have performed.Assign each rate a symbol as Rate1, Rate2 etc.
Now find out the smallest value of theses rates say Rate2
Not find the relative rate for each trial just divide the rate of the trial by this smallest value.
So , Relative Rate for first Trial = Rate1/Rate 2 ( will be > 1)
Relative rate for second trial = Rate2/Rate2 = 1

In this lab we will be expressing rate as a change in concentration of reactants over time. In order to calculate this, we need to know the initial concentrations of our reagents after they are combined but before the reaction occurs. This is a dilution process. Recall that the calculation for a dilution is accomplished using the relationship M1V1 = M2V2. If the [S2O3 2- ] is initially 2.49x10-4 M, and the reaction takes 145 seconds for the solution to...
