Answer #1

Lets define the 8 steps to strategic decision making by taking the context of case in consideration:

1. Define the problem

as Amanda, I face a problem of whether to buy new computers or upgrade existing ones. The problem is time sensitive because any delay impacts the productivity of employees.

2. Identify decision criterion

Here, I will consider the factors/variables that will influence my decision. For eg, what is the cost of new computers vs cost of upgrading old computers. I will also look into the benefits like: new computers will likely increase the productivity through new software

3. Allocating weight to criterion

The most important criterion is to increase productivity. Since the task is heavily done through computers, increasing the processing power of computers makes sense. Thus, here I will allocate more weightage to productivity, rather than cost.

4. Developing alternatives

One alternative can be leasing computers for a short time during the peak sales season. However, since the company does not believe in leasing, this is out of option. Another alternative is to evaluate that whether new computers are required or not.

5. Analyzing the alternatives

In this we rank the alternatives we have considered. For eg, lets say I have the following alternatives:

Alternative 1: Buy new computers Score: 8

Alternative 2: Outsourcing work which required high processing of computers Score 5

Alternative 3: Providing calculators to employees Score 3

6. Select alternative

Here I select the alternative. If any computer seller is giving me discounts or fairly good deal, then I opt to buying new computers. Since, I dont have consider the costs of outsourcing, this will be the viable option.

7.Implementing alternative

Here I search for best offers to buy new computers. The objective is to implement my decision by incurring minimum possible cost

8. Evaluating decision effectiveness

Evaluation depends upon case to case. In the case of Amanda, this evaluation could be in terms of increase in productivity. Productivity can be measured in terms on query resolved,or any other
