Plains Wanderer samples were collected from two points in time. A pre-clearing historic sample was collected from feathers stored in a museum collection. This historic sample included 40 samples from a collection of specimens shot in 1955 at a single population near Warracknabcal. Victoria. A post-clearing contemporary sample was collected in 2015 from the same area as the historic sample. This contemporary sample from 40 individuals was taken from captured and released adult birds. All samples had DNA extracted and were genotyped at three microsatellite loci At the time of sampling, a population census was made in order to estimate the size of the population remaining The census of population numbers found 84 birds.
