Question

You are driving a massive truck and become stuck at a railway crossing. Your truck completely blocks the railway tracks, which extend in a straight line in both directions. You hear a train approaching when it toots its horn. (a) Let /1 be the intensity of the sound you hear from the horn initially, and 12-70 dB the sound when the train is at half the original distance. ) Calculate the intensity of the horn, 11, in dB. i) Calculate the distance at which the sound intensity is 15 dB greater than , in terms of the original distance. (b) The train horn is emitted with frequency fo440 Hz. You hear the horn at frequency fi 467 Hz. Calculate vT, the speed of the train towards you, assuming you are stationary and the speed of sound in air is v 343 m/s. Provide vr in both m/s and km/hr. (c) The sound of the horn is reflected by your truck. Calculate f2, the frequency of the sound of the horn heard by the train driver, for the reflected sound. (d) The train driver will hear both the original horn and the reflected sound together and thus will hear beats. Describe the combination of the two sounds, and calculate the frequency of the sound that the driver will hear and the frequency of the beats.
