Religion was the big driving force..if you take Spain's foray into South America, converting the masses and all that...the economic forces were not far behind, given that gold was in abundance in those regions

Depends on where you are talking about.

Ex. In Virginia it was economics. They were looking to get rich. In Massachusetts it was religion. They were looking to escape persecution in Europe for their religious beliefs.

It is a mistake to treat the New World as a single place.
