Consider the following statement from the text, “Immunologists had to face the fact that there simply was not enough DNA to encode all the relevant B-cell receptors, using the one-gene, one-polypeptide chain rule.” In one sentence, could you explain, in your own words, what this statement means to a fellow student in your immunology course?

Answer #1

The fact that sufficient DNA is not present to represent the complete spectrum of B cell receptors would mean that a single gene is somehow able to code for multiple polypeptide chains which implies that the single gene is altered in some way to generate the large number of B-cell receptors found in the B-cell population.

This suggests a mechanism of either alternative splicing or genomic recombination, which would allow a single locus to generate a large number of variants.
