Problem-4

The x and y components of both the forces are

F_1_x = 5 cos 60 = 2.5N

and

F_1_y = 5 sin 60 = 4.33N

Similarly

F_2_x = 4 cos 45 = 2.83N

and

F_2_y = 4 sin 45 = -2.83N

Thus the x and y components of the resultant force are

F_x = 2.5 + 2.83 = 5.33N

and

F_y = 4.33-2.83 = 1.5N

Thus resultant force is

\vec F = \sqrt{(F_x)^2 + (F_y)^2}

by plugging all the values we get

\vec F = \sqrt{(5.33)^2 + (1.5)^2}

\vec F = 5.54N

and the direction is

\theta = tan^{-1}(\frac{F_y}{F_x})

\theta = tan^{-1}(\frac{1.5}{5.33})

\theta = 15.72 ^\circ

Hence the resultant force vector has a magnitude of 5.54N and is in the direction of 15.72 degrees positive from x axis.
