When two objects at different temperatures come into contact, a heat transfer of energy occurs, where the hottest objects have a much higher energy transfer rate, and consequently it is perceived as hotter. On the other hand, the coldest object has a lower transfer speed and is perceived as colder. This transfer of energy in the form of heat between the two objects concludes when both reach the same temperature (thermal equilibrium).
