Answer #1

Answer 1:Selective media generally selects for the growth of a desired organism, stopping the growth of or altogether killing non-desired organisms.A selective media is composed of specific ingredients to inhibit the growth of certain species of microbes in a mixed culture while allowing others to grow

A differential media contains specific ingredients or chemicals that allow the observer to visually distinguish which species possess and which species lack a specific biochemical process. Blood agar is a differential medium that distinguishes bacterial species by their ability to break down red blood cells.

Answer 2):(a)A culture medium must supply suitable carbon and energy sources and other nutrients, sometimes including "growth factors" (defined below). It is important to note that no one medium will support the growth of all microorganisms. Accordingly, the elements required for the maintenance, growth and reproduction of all organisms will be used by different organisms in different ways.

b)inhibitors are used inculture media to inhibit the growth of all microbes other than cultured microbes.

(c)Substrate is the surface on which a cell or organism grows or is attached such as the use of microcarriers in cell culture.

(d)Indicators in culture media are especially used for differential purposes. The color changes due to acid formation by particular organisms are important cultural characteristics
