HMR <--------> H+ + MR-

Red Yellow

The reaction is an equilibrium reaction and the problem can be solved by Le Chatliers Principle

(A) ADDITION OF ACID: If acid is added the equilibrium will shift to LEFT. Because on addition of acid the H+ concentration will increase, so to consume the extra H+ equilibrium will shift to left.

The solution will be RED colored, as more of HMR (red colored substance) is formed.

Due the shift of equilibrium to LEFT more HMR (red colored substance) is formed.

(B) ADDITION OF BASE:

When a base is added the H+ will be consumed. This will result in more dissociation of HMR. As a result the equilibrium shift to RIGHT.

Yellow Color solution will be observed.

When a base is added the H+ will be consumed. This will result in more dissociation of HMR. As a result the equilibrium shift to RIGHT. As more of MR- will form the solution will become yellow colored.
